So, why is AM radio so much more likely to broadcast a stronger sound than FM? The main difference is mainly in the way the carrier waves are modified or modulated. With an AM radio, the signal's amplitude, or strength, is changed slightly to include the sound data. With FM radio, much of this signal is left out because of the large amplitude of the signal tends to have. Because of this, AM radio tends to broadcast much clearer sounds then FM.

To explain this a bit further, think about how television and radio transmit their electromagnetic waves. When you place a radio receiver on a receiver, it sends out radio waves in the form of radio waves which bounce off objects in its path. These radio waves are sent out at different frequencies. Each radio receiver is assigned a certain frequency. When a transmission occurs, it is done so using that frequency.

The radio waves are sent out with an amplitude. This amplitude tells the receiver what tone to tune into. If the amplitude is high, then the radio transmission is very clear and noticeable. Conversely, if the amplitude is low, the transmission may not be audible but the receiver can distinguish some voices. The reason for this is that some sounds are very loud and other soft. Most receivers have been tuned to broadcast at a certain level of amplitude to get the correct audible sound.

The difference between an FM radio and an AM radio is the phase amplitude or the "pulse width modulation" used in transmitting the signal. When an FM radio transmits, it uses a specific frequency to transmit the signal. This is usually much higher than the amplitude used for an AM radio. However, when an FM radio transmits, it usually covers a greater range of frequencies than an AM radio since the phase amplitude used is typically less.

With the advent of AM, FM, and now VHF radio signals being broadcasted, there are far fewer radio stations that broadcast on these lower frequencies. For instance, a frequency range of 110khz is generally beyond the range of most VHF receivers. Therefore, most VHF receivers will not allow you to receive any type of transmission on those frequencies. As a result, there are far fewer stations out there which make use of these lower frequencies. But that doesn't mean that they're not worth trying.
